This small lap held steel string instrument is perfect for all ages 9 and up. Note and chord names below each string on interchangeable guides make for easy melody play and chording (comes with Childrens’ songbook). Unique Single Bar Chording system makes it possible to easily play all major, minor and 7th chords in each Key. Also a perfect improvisational instrument. Easy to play both chords and either pluck or bow melodies simultaneously. The strings are easy to replace steel folk guitar strings. Available in both tenor and soprano versions.
And this is the perfect bowing instrument for any beginner, as there are no strings to fret, no wrong notes (tuned in one Key at a time), and it is comfortably played on the lap instead of awkwardly being played in standard violin fashion. Just bow across the end of each string to produce any of the notes in any particular Key.
Note: Bowed Songbirds work on a principle similar to bowed psaltries, but have three primary differences; (1) fewer strings, (2) bassier strings for a deeper, fuller sound, and, (3) are easily chordable with our unique single bar chording system.
Because the two instruments pictured above, although brand new, incorporate the old bow holder design and have a string spacing of 5/16 inch instead of 3/8 as on the new design, the price has been reduced as indicated.
price – $295 (reduced from $350)
12 STRING BOWED SONGBIRDS
Slightly larger instrument (24 x 6 x 9 inches, 4 lbs) with a fuller sound because of the extra steel strings.
price – $375
14 STRING BOWED SONGBIRD
Even larger instrument (26 x 7 x 9 inches, 5 lbs) with an even fuller, bassier, almost cello-like sound.
price – $395
Note: the 12 and 14 string bowed birds have enough strings that one could alternatively tune them chromatically.
BOWING and CHORDING
You can actually chord and bow melodies on all of the Bowed Songbirds simultaneously. First, beautiful sustained chords are produced by pushing the Single Chord Bar down with one hand and strumming across the strings with the index finger of the hand holding the bow, and then bowing the end of the strings to produce a harmonious melody.
